In a new study Citizens Advice reveals the challenges faced by just about managing families and says many of the problems are ‘fixable’.  

The report is based on new analysis of the problems faced by the 700,000 working people helped by Citizens Advice between October 2015 and September 2016.  It identifies the most common challenges as:

can't afford bankruptcy fee

There were 24,251 individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the third quarter of 2016, a 6.0% increase on the previous quarter, and 19.3% higher than the same quarter in 2015, reports The Insolvency Service.

Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs)

There were 13,917 IVAs in Q3 2016, which was 10.9% higher compared to Q2 2016 and 28.8% higher compared to the same period in 2015.

The new research, part of the Money Advice Service’s “Closing the Savings Gap” report released today, shows how just one emergency could easily push 16.8 million into debt.

Millions at risk with savings of £100 or less

Two in five of the working population have less than £100 in savings, putting them and their finances at risk if an unexpected bill lands.

A report by the charity, The Children’s Society, finds that children in low-income families with multiple debts are at far higher risk of suffering from mental health problems than those in families who owe money to a single type of creditor.

  • There are around 2.4 million children living in families with problem debt in England and Wales
  • Children living in families struggling with debt are five times more likely to be unhappy than children in families who don’t have difficulty with debt
  • Putting them at risk of developing mental health problems.
