Prison Sentence for Council Tax defaulter

Thursday, 2nd October 2014

Jonathan Justice, of Fenkle Street, Alnwick, Northumberland, consistently failed to pay his Council tax over a period of 5 years and as a result has been jailed.

Having previously failed to answer a summons to court for non-payment of his council tax to the Northumberland County Council he appeared on a warrant issued for his arrest before South East Northumberland Magistrates’ Court recently.

The court heard that Justice owed council tax of £5,421.76 for various periods between 2009 and 2014 and at the hearing he was sent to prison for 90 days.

Mike Thomas head and founder of DebtWizard.com said: “Although this is an extremely rare case people need to understand that non payment of council tax is a serious matter. If it is proven that the debtor ‘wilfully refused’ to pay the council tax or was ‘culpably neglectful’, which means they had the means to pay but have simply neglected to pay, then they are inevitably looking at a prison term.”

Anyone receiving a summons to appear before their local magistrates’ court to explain why they have not paid their council tax must seek advice professional, immediately. Failure to attend will lead to a warrant being issued, as in the case of Jonathan Justice.”
